This castle was built during the reign of Sultan Suleyman the magnificent. The sultan had 200,000 troops here for the battle of Rhodes, defended by the knights of St John in 1522. The castle is now a museum and exhibits mostly items to do with the sea.

Directions: From the habor near the bazaar follow the signs to the Kartal Restaurant, then up Eski Cami Sokak, then walk up the hill to the castle.

Ferries to Rhodes ($35 one-way or day-return; $50 open return; sometimes less in high season) run daily in high season, dropping to one a week in winter.

There's a once-weekly car ferry (cars $150 one-way).

Fast-ferry or a hydrofoil (flying boat) operate daily to Rhodes. These boats are able to accommodate over 250 people. They feature air-conditioning, Pullman type seats. Ferries also have television, video entertainment and a bar.

They depart from Marmaris harbor at 9:15 a.m. and reach Rhodes in just an hour. On the return to Marmaris, the crafts depart from Rhodes at 4:00 p.m.

Sedir Adasi (Cleopatra's Island)

This is a small island near Tasbuku, where ruins can be found which date back to the Roman Empire in 4 BC. Before that time it was Anthony and Cleopatra's love nest. The island has a magnificent lagoon beach with velvet soft sand which, it is said, Anthony brought in from the Sahara for his beloved Cleopatra.

How to get there: If you have a car you can drive towards Tasbuku and then take a short boat trip to the island. Boats run everyday starting at 09.30 and ending at 18.30. There is a small entrance fee once you get there.

PAMMUKALLE (Cotton Castle)

Pamukkale is Türkiye's foremost mineral-bath spa. Pamukkale has been a spa since the Romans built the spa city of Hierapolis around a sacred warm-water spring. The sacred pool is still there, littered with marble columns from the Roman temple. You can swim in it for a small fee.

The extensive ruins of Hierapolis include a grand theater and a vast necropolis (cemetery). There is also a museum on site displaying treasured discoveries.

See Pamukkale, near Denizli, on a day-trip from İzmir, Selcuk, Ephesus, Kusadasi or Marmaris, or stay a night or two here. You can easily combine a visit to Pamukkale with a visit to Aphrodisias, the ancient City of Aphrodite, goddess of love. Pamukkale is also a good place to stop for the night going to or coming from Konya.

APhrodisias (City of the Goddess of Love)

An antique city situated near the Karacasu-Aydýn province, was established in the name of Goddess Aphrodite. It continued to be a great center of inhabitance from the Bronze Age to the Byzantine Period (2800 B.C. - 220 A.D.). At Aphrodisias, ancient city of Sculptors, you will see one of the best looking ruins of the world with the Theater, Odeon, Bishop's Palace, Stadium, Temple of Aphrodite and the Museum with the gorgeous Relief and Statues of the Sculptors. The Aphrodisias Stadium is one of the best preserved stadiums among the antique city stadiums in Anatolia.

St Paul's New Testament Letter to the Ephesians was written to the citizens of Ephesus. The Virgin Mary is believed to have spent her last days on earth here. St John is believed to have written his Gospel here, and to have been buried in the St John Basilica.

Don't miss the excellent Ephesus Museum in the town of Selçuk. The Ephesus archeological site is 3 km (2 miles) from the town of Selçuk on the road to Kusadasi and Pamucak Beach. You can walk from Selçuk to the archeological site along a tree-shaded lane in about 25 or 30 minutes, but you may want to stop along the way and see the scant ruins of the famous Temple of Artemis (Artemision), one of the Seven Wonders of the World.
